About NLP

Where does it come from?
The origins of Neuro Linguistic Programming date back to the 1970’s, when two academics from the university of California started modelling the behaviour patterns of selected therapeutic geniuses who were achieving excellence in their fields.
John Grinder and Richard Brandler identified and encoded the patterns they found into linguistic models, and Neuro Linguistic Programming was born.
The practice was popularised in 1975 when the pair published 2 volumes outlining the first 2 models.
It has since become highly regarded practice worldwide, and has helped individuals, business leaders, and even world leaders to achieve profound and lasting changes.
What exactly is Neuro Linguistic Programming?
Neuro Linguistic Programming can be interpreted quite literally as the sum of its three parts:
Neuro: Meaning that the process is linked to our neurological functioning (what’s going on in our brains).
Linguistic: Meaning that it is based around our use of language (the way we speak to others and ourselves).
Programming: Meaning that it focuses on ingrained patterns of behaviour that go deeper than conscious choice (unconscious decisions that get in the way of what we really want).
This is about how the language we use influences the way our brain processes our reality, and how that in turn programmes limiting patterns of behaviour in our unconscious.
Once we understand and recognise this in ourselves, we are able to change it!

How does NLP help with self development?
The human brain filters out so much of the information available to it at any one time. But each of us do this differently. Our unconscious mind is programmed to take in certain things, and discard others. And what it chooses to filter out is information that it finds irrelevant.
The thing is ‘irrelevant’ is a subjective term, based on the belief systems of each individual.
As a quick example, say you’ve spent years saying (and thus programming your unconscious to believe) that you can’t make a decent cup of coffee. Two things are going to happen. Firstly, your unconscious mind will continue to perpetuate that ‘Truth’ by making sure that you do, in fact, make coffee badly. And secondly it will filter out any information that may contradict this belief.
The filter that we develop shapes our perception of the world. And our very reality is built around that perception.
So… what if we reset the filter? What if we reprogrammed the settings, and changed those core beliefs? We’d start to see things we previously missed. Our perception of the world, and the way we interact with it, would shift irrevocably.
That’s what Neuro Linguistic Programming does; it identifies the patterns that are holding you back, and gives you the tools you need to change them.
