Bowen Therapy

The Bowen Clinic
Based in Formby, Merseyside, The Bowen Clinic has been helping people for over 12 years. We specialise in all forms of Bowen Therapy, providing relief from pain, anxiety, and a range of other issues to people of all ages.

What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy restores balance, positively influencing both mind and body. It was originally developed in Australia in the 1950’s, and has been growing in popularity in the UK in recent years.
The treatment itself involves a qualified Bowen Therapist carrying out a series of small rolling movements over specific muscles, tendons or ligaments, interspersed with periods of rest. These movements trigger signals to the brain, which stimulate the body to heal itself.

Bowen Treatment and the Autonomic Nervous System
The ANS is made up of two parts: The Sympathetic Nervous System, and The Parasympathetic Nervous System. The sympathetic nervous system accelerates functions in the body to help us deal with stress. The parasympathetic nervous system slows things down.
When the autonomic nervous system is overstimulated and the sympathetic nervous system is in control, our bodies go into a mode traditionally referred to as ‘fight or flight’. We feel constant low-level (or even high-level) stress, and many of the systems in our body can suffer as a result. This condition is all too common in modern life, and it impacts almost every aspect of our health.
One of the many advantages of Bowen Therapy is its ability to set the body into a ‘rest and relax’ mode, where the parasympathetic nervous system takes over. In fact, it’s quite common for clients to fall asleep during treatment!

What to expect
On the day of your treatment, you should make sure you are well hydrated, and wear light, loose clothing.
Your Bowen Therapist will start the session with a short consultation, so that she can get a better picture of your health and decide on the right treatment for you. Then you’ll lie down and relax, as she performs gentle rolling movements on specific areas of your body. Between movements, your therapist may leave the room for short periods, to allow your body the time it needs to respond and balance itself.
Sessions last around 45 minutes. People respond differently to the treatment, depending on their specific circumstances, and so it is common for some clients to feel sleepy afterwards, while others leave the session feeling energized.
